Dal Tadka: A Delicious and Hearty Indian Lentil Soup

Dal tadka is a popular Indian lentil soup that is made with a variety of spices and herbs. It is a delicious and hearty dish that is perfect for a cold day.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup urad dal (split black gram lentils)
  • 1 cup moong dal (split mung beans)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 6-8 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the dals in a colander until the water runs clear.
  2. Add the dals to a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water.
  3. Close the pressure cooker and cook on high heat for 5 whistles.
  4. Let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  6. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds and cook until they start to pop.
  7. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and asafoetida and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  8. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, or until fragrant.
  9. Pour the tadka over the cooked dal and stir to combine.
  10. Garnish with cilantro and serve hot.

Tips:

  • For a thicker dal, mash some of the lentils with the back of a spoon before adding the tadka.
  • For a spicier dal, add more red chili powder to taste.
  • You can also add other spices to the tadka, such as coriander powder, fenugreek powder, or hing.
  • Dal tadka can be served with rice, roti, or paratha.

Enjoy!

Here are some additional tips for making dal tadka:

  • Use a heavy-bottomed pot to prevent the dal from sticking to the bottom.
  • If the dal becomes too thick, add a little bit of water to thin it out.
  • Dal tadka can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I hope you enjoy making dal tadka!
